Now, 12 years after the violent bombing, the opening of the “peace park” slated to commemorate the tragedy’s victims is more in reach than ever before.

WA Today is reporting that the park could be ready in just 6 months, based on a conversation with Bali Peace Park Association chairman Gary Nash.

Bali Peace Park would be built where the Sari Club used to stand in Kuta, the site of the 2002 bombing.

$900,000 has already been committed to the park project by Australian federal, state and territory governments said association chairman Nick Way, according to the West Australian.

“The threat of terrorism, both abroad and at home, makes this project as relevant and important in 2014 as it was in the tragic days of the 2002 and 2005 Bali attacks,” said Way, as quoted by the the West Australian.

“We’ve had pledges from state governments that gives us about $900,000, and our evaluations put the price at about $1 million, so once we have an idea we’ll have to go back to the government and go to some corporates for support but it’s such a good cause I can’t see why they wouldn’t jump on board,” said Nash, as quoted by WA Today.

Hopefully Nash and Way are right that the project is closer to reaching fruition. We’d hate to hear that government roadblocks or issues with land ownership will get in the way of this respectable and well-intentioned project.
