‘Tom & Jerry’ public enemy no. 1: Tribun Bali is asking you to weigh in
Violent video games like “Doom” and movies like “The Matrix” have a bad rep for negatively influencing our kids, and understandably with all the fighting going on. But, are cartoons like Tom & Jerry, the classic cat and mouse spoof really endangering the children?
Officials in Jakarta seem to think so.
We remember when some parents wouldn’t let their kids watch Harry Potter and we thought that was a bit overprotective.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has targeted three series that it thinks are “dangerous” for kids: Milky Way, Little Krishna and Tom & Jerry. Earning honorable mention with a “watch carefully” label are “Crayon Sinchan” and that vigilante “Spongebob Squarepants.” Keep in mind that these are among Indonesia’s most popular cartoons, at least according to this Indonesian blogger.
At least this is something that’s being openly discussed in Indonesian media and not 100% pushed from the top down. Tribun Bali is actually urging readers to get a dialgoue on the topic going. Better speak up or that dubious cat Doraemon gets cut next.
